154 Stanton St. New York City. L. E. S. A sad day, perhaps, for the New York Studio Gallery for it was the Gallery’s closer.
The artist? Al Wadzinski and his exhibit titled False Idols. There were a few and I took offense to one in particular.
A small replica of Jesus Christ on the Cross tied to what appeared to be a horse’s hoof. At first glance I thought the hoof belonged to a cow.
The rest of this particular piece is unimportant. At least to me. What I find offensive is the use
of Jesus Christ on a hoof placed on the floor. I saw no purpose or value in it other than to corroborate the exhibits name.
Thankfully his work is more complex. The astonishing central piece with its size, gold-colored bones and gigantic scope commands
attention yet obscures the artist’s smaller pieces by comparison. Size does not rule over matter and this is made clear by the size of the room.
On the wall we found other pieces. Replicas of horses heads made of metal, cotton and other random materials.
My favorite was the silver head with blue arrows on its side which I found very poetic. Even roman in its pose.
The piece we all wanted was the Eagle made of copper crying out for freedom. www.nystudiogallery.com
I wish the best to the Gallery and it’s owners. We will await your change of address.
